Reasons why we lose our appetite as we age include both physical and emotional factors:
- Psychological factors that interfere with our desire to eat — sadness, depression, anxiety
- Eating alone — may make the experience less pleasurable
- Side effect of taking medication — some drugs may suppress our appetite
- Certain medical conditions
- Chewing impairment — for example, dentures.
- Changes in how we taste and smell foods
- Decrease in variety of foods — lack of mobility may mean we have difficulty buying and preparing food
